Florida State Targets Top College Football Recruit Class on Signing Day

Florida State University, comes off the second season of 10 victories in the last decade, can land top college football class entering National Signing day recruiting analysts said.

Today is the first opportunity for football players from school to make a formal written commitment to a college under the national Collegiate Athletic Association rules. Recruits could previously only be non-binding verbal commitments.

Florida State sits atop ESPNU recruiting rankings, while the national champion Auburn University has jumped to second place in the lobby for the unofficial title of first class this year. The Seminoles have received verbal commitments from 12 of the top 150 players ranked ESPNU, 11 of them played football in high school in Florida.

“We get the personal relationships built,” Florida State Jimbo Fisher, who enters his second season as coach Bobby Bowden for the replacement, said in a televised interview with ESPN. “When the (recruits) came on campus, our kids did a great job of selling what we’re trying to teach. They buy into”

The University of Alabama follows at No. 3 Auburn in the standings class ESPNU, with Southern California, Texas, Georgia, Florida, Oklahoma, Ohio State and Clemson completing the top 10 that the players continue to send letters of intent.

Auburn, which beat the University of Oregon last month for the Bowl Championship Series title, has received a commitment from the perspective of the nation’s No. 2 quarterback, Kiehl Frazier, a possible replacement for Heisman Trophy Cam Newton.

The Tigers also won the first-order center and two offensive tackle prospects, including 6-foot-7, 325 pounds Cyrus Kouandjio of Hyattsville, Md., who announced his decision today on ESPNU.

“Winning the national championship gave us exposure to children who may be coming to the end were not sure,” Coach Gene Chizik Auburn said in an interview with ESPN. “So of course it helped us.”

Among the best players make verbal commitments to the State of Florida are security Karlos Williams of Davenport, Florida, and running back James Wilder Jr. of Tampa, Fla., whose father was a Pro Bowl during enforcement back in the National Football League. The Seminoles now secured a commitment from defensive No. 2-rated side, Tim Jernigan Lake City, Florida.

Florida State was 10-4 last year in first season as coach Fisher, first school season 10 wins in seven years. In the nine seasons before Fisher was able Bowden, the Seminoles went 74-42. It follows a stretch of 14 whose school had a 152-19-1 record and won two national championships under Bowden.

The coaching change has turned the program’s stability after years of uncertainty about when 81-year Bowden, who spent 33 years as coach, will retire, ESPN recruiting analyst Tom Luginbill said.

Alabama holds the No. 1 spot in the Rivals.com recruiting rankings, followed by Florida State, Southern California, Texas, Auburn and LSU.

Jadeveon Clowney, top-rated recruit the nation’s high school, is undecided on his college choice and is one of those players who will not announce today. A 6-foot-6, 240 pounds, defensive end from Rock Hill, South Carolina, Clowney scored South Carolina, Alabama, Clemson, LSU and North Carolina among the schools he is considering.

The quarterback’s top-rated high school Jeff Driskell of Oveido, Fla., who signed a letter of intent with the University of Florida. This will be the first recruiting class Gators coach Muschamp, who took over the program after Urban Meyer resigned in December.

class Texas has one of the nation’s top two high school running backs in Malcolm Brown, of Cibolo, Texas.

Isaiah Crowell, the best running back in the rankings ESPNU, said today he will attend Georgia. He held a puppy bulldog – the mascot of the University – after his television ad in his high school in Columbus, Georgia.
